One-on-One Help To Get Diabetics Access to Healthcare
The Diabetes Resource Center works one on one with those in need of help gaining access to healthcare, especially their diabetic medication and supplies.
Our goal is to take care of the immediate crisis and then assist our clients into long term, stable solutions. Formerly known as the Diabetes Association of St. Joseph County and the Diabetes Education Center, our agency has been in the community since 1954, helping local people with diabetes manage their disease.
While diabetes is a manageable disease, if left untreated, it can cause many complications, even death.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects 30,000 people in St. Joseph County. According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps 10.9% of residents in Indiana have diabetes. 1 in 3 do not know they have the disease. It is the fifth leading cause of death in Indiana. It is also the leading cause nationally for blindness, amputations and kidney disease.
Read the 2017 National Diabetics Statistics Report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It has statistics on diabetes and disease complications which highlight the need for diabetes control. There is also information on the four types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, gestational and prediabetes.
